This tastes just as it did when my Grandmother Couvillion made it every morning till the day she died. I have to disagree with the other review -- my father WORKED at the local Folger plant and he came home and drank Community! I will say that this is NOT the darkest Community blend -- those would be the French Roast and Evangeline Blends (also available on Amazon), and the Evangeline being the best coffee I have ever tasted -- dark but not bitter at all. It is more expensive though and so this is my alternative since cash is tight. I COULD buy even cheaper coffee but life is short.

OK flavor.

I really didn't see any difference between this coffee and Folgers, Maxwell House or similar brand. This Community Dark Roast did not impress me enough to want to purchase it again.

The wording for the description of this product can be confusing

but only if you do not read it.

Community may need to reword the description, however--

when the package reads 100% Chicory, this should indicate

the product is --- 100% Chicory---no coffee.

The product does show a short period allowed for brewing.

This indicates product is getting to you "on time"

and produced freshly. This herb is harvested and roasted

to get to us fresh.

I keep mine in the freezer and move it to the fridge

when am ready to brew.

I brew this plain and drink it as I like my coffee

cream and Ste-vita. Do not find bitter when consumed this way.

Because of misunderstandings here,

Amazon has pulled the product

and I must go to Community to get my supply.

Caffeine elevates my blood sugar thus chicory

is my coffee substitute. Have been drinking coffee/chicory

blend for seven decades and just chicory for about 2 years.

Bought this at a great price and Amazon did a fine job of getting it to me. I guess I wasn't a very informed consumer (my fault) because I was surprised when the ingredients on the bag had a sticker over it that just says "100% Chicory". So, there is absolutely NO COFFEE in it. I hate to be Mr. Precision here, but it really shouldn't be called coffee if there is none it. However, I suppose the same argument could be made for Soy "Milk". Anyhow, it is called Medium Dark Roast, and we were game since we did like the coffee at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans and do like dark, rich coffees. We made our first batch mixing 50% Chicory/ 50% Starbucks Bold Roast (our regular). We both could only make it through about 1.5 cups because, while smooth, it was way, WAY too sweet....like drinking Molasses. Today, we made 1/3 Chicory, 1/3 Bold Decaf Coffe, and 1/3 Bold Regular. Still way too sweet, and I have the chicory aftertaste still in my mouth. Unfortunately, using it at this rate (or less probably), it is going to take forever to get through all these bags.

I won't be purchasing again and recommend you try a little first.

Its great to be able to blend your own chicory coffee. I use the fresh roasted Sumatra at Costco's with Community Coffee's chicory. My blend is 8oz of chicory to 16oz of coffee. If you want a stronger chicory favor, use more. Use less for a milder blend. The good thing about blending yourself is the ability to use a good grade of coffee. I believe Cafe du Monde uses a low grade of coffee.

If you don't need 6 bags of chicory, you can order it directly from Community Coffee. Its $2.99 a bag, plus shipping (at least $6.95) from them. Clearly Amazon is a better value. I will usually end up giving a bag or 2 away to friends or family that express an interest. Storing the rest in the freezer is a good idea.

I got this a few times when on sale between $7 and $9 for the 3-pack of whole bean. Bought this breakfast blend both times. I REALLY like this coffee. I usually only drink coffee in the morning but have found myself wanting a cup of this in the late afternoon early evening, so on occasion I brew twice a day. I have had no problems with freshness or date as others have mentioned. My most recent order was stamped "brew by 03/02/2011" on the bags, they'll be long gone by then! Even still coffee doesn't actually EXPIRE. It smells great after I grind it! Nice and fresh and bright smelling.

His favorite coffee is at Costco, Roasterie, and it is cheaper. He also likes one at Sam's, Parisi. I believe it is cheaper too and a bigger bag. I know this was three bags, but they come in one big bag.

You know when you open a bag of coffee how you stick your nose in there and I knew I was in trouble when it just smelled bad - a little bit like a dirty ashtray. Despite the smell, I made a pot of coffee and the taste was just as bad as the smell. I'm donating the unopened bags to a homeless shelter but I feel a little guilty subjecting anyone to this coffee.

When I bought this coffee, I knew it wasn't going to be Kona or Blue Mountain but I didn't expect it to be this bad.

"You Get What You Pay For - Very Ordinary at Best" 2010-10-09

It's not a matter of being a coffee snob, but let's be honest - Folgers or Maxwell House or coffee from the local diner (or Walmart) is not exactly going to hold up in a taste test against a good Sumatra or Mocha Java or whatever other specialty coffee from your favorite coffee shop. This coffee is not completely terrible - it doesn't bite back - but to me its not worth any of the cost savings.

I drink coffee for the enjoyment - especially when I drink decaf. I'll go back to Peets even if its nearly twice the cost - coffee I can pick out of a line-up any day. If I just wanted the caffeine fix or if I loaded my coffee with flavored syrup this is a winner. But as my cup of this coffee goes cold while I write this, and the aftertaste of it in my mouth goes sour, I find I have no desire to finish it. In fact, I'm probably chucking the rest of the just-opened bag because I don't think I have the desire to make it again either.

I have used 8 O'Clock green bag decaf beans before and found them acceptable. Since I find caffeinated Colombian beans to be tasty, I figured Colombian Decaf would be better than the green bag. Not so. The coffee tasted flat. Didn't matter if I increased or decreased the amount used, the taste was just not very good. I have mixed them into a bag of decaf beans that have a good flavor to use them up. Doesn't seem to affect the good beans too much. Won't be buying them again.
