I grew up in North East Louisiana, Shreveport to be exact. My Mother's family was from Marksville, which is in Avoyelles Parish. My Mom, and all her family were old school Cajuns. Born speaking French and learned English late in the elementary school.

Every time my Mom went home for the weekend, all of my brothers and sisters would go. One of the constants in their diet, from year to year, was Community Coffee. When I was kid, the main way to make coffee was a peculator. Man, the smell of that strong Cajun Coffee was like fantastic. We had to drink it with milk because it was strong, we wouldn't have slept for a week!

Now that I am grown, I buy the New Orleans blend of Community. It is strong, but not so strong that the flavor is lost. I make a pot every morning and have 2 to 4 big cups before the work day is over.

I drink this stuff because it tastes wonderful. It also reminds me of my Cajun history and the wonderful food that it second nature to all of us Coonasses! It is a taste of Cajun history in every sip....and a damn good taste at that!

Already on my 4th box of this stuff...it's terribly addicting!! You don't even need sugar or cream (if you're a pro coffee drinker), otherwise a little cream but the coffee's actually already sweet!! I love this flavor, very smooth, soft, not too bold, and best of all you can actually get 2 pots out of 1 packet!! I dont know how they do it, but they must use incredibly high quality coffee. It's perfect hot or iced!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

P.S.: also try Butter Pecan, Jamaican Me Crazy, and Almond Amaretto.

I can get the regular cheaper and use coupons but this blend is not to be found . Last week I ground up a bag of red bag EOC, in a Capresso Infinity conical burr grinder on the 3rd finest of 16 settings. Brewed in a real cheap(but excellent) drip maker,(at the GF's house) the results were outstanding. The nutty chocolaty taste really comes alive when ground real fine. And the slight hint of a wine finish leaves a lasting favorable aftertaste on the tongue. For the ease of availabilty and the price, the taste is hard to top.

Eight O'clock coffee has been around since 1859. Can anyone honestly give a product a bad review that has somehow been sold for over 150 years?!? IT HAS BEEN AROUND THAT LONG FOR A REASON. Eight O'clock has known the importance of offering its customers whole-bean coffee instead of that pre-ground stuff in a can. For many years, this was the only coffee widely available like that and I'm glad to see that other coffees are finally coming around to what Eight O'clock has always known. Coffee is so much fresher tasting if ground just prior to brewing. This is a coffee that does not have to rely on a huge advertising budget and doesn't have to sell coffee at inflated prices just to turn a profit. Eight O'clock has been quietly plugging along for many years because it offers a great product at an excellent value.

That being said, are there better coffees out there? Absolutely. Is there better coffee out there that can be purchase at this value? Not that I have encountered. The wonderful taste and aroma, the freshness and value, is what leads me to give this a 5-star review. I will mention that the price on line is more expensive than what I can find locally so it pays to shop around. In comparison to gourmet coffees, the roast is not consistent bean to bean as they are of varying shades. However to be fair, Eight O'clock roasts in larger batches and has never attempted to be a gourmet coffee. The other pre-ground coffees are likely the same but who could tell? Eight O'clock does use 100% Arabica beans so there is no chicory or Robust beans thrown in.

You can purchase this pre-ground if you like but if you really want great coffee, buy the whole bean and grind just before use. Since coffee is 99% water, filtered water makes a huge difference for ANY coffee. Also, keep your beans stored in an airtight container out of sunlight, and NOT IN THE FREEZER!! If you like a bolder taste, the French roast is excellent as well. A darker roast has less caffeine than a medium to light roast so I sometimes mix 50-50 with the French roast. Either way, I enjoy my Eight O'clock coffee a lot. The bags have a one-way valve to let the built-up gasses escape and each bag has a best-by date. I have found the quality to be consistent bag to bag and year to year. If I had to compare this to my gourmet coffees I sometimes order, this would get an OK rating. But, when I compare it to all the other coffees it shares shelf space with...EIGHT O'CLOCK KICKS THEIR CAN!

Eight O'Clock Coffee French Roast fits our bill for an everyday brew. We grind the whole beans ourselves to a relatively fine grind. This is a medium dark french roast with complex earthy flavors. You won't find (or miss) Starbuck's burnt taste. If you're looking for a good morning coffee at the right price I'd give this one a try.

I like a good cup of Joe every morning and this coffee makes it a great experience. French roast is one of my favorite. The taste is bold yet there's no bitterness to it. Like other reviewers, I too kept overlooking a `cheap' bag of coffee, how deceived I was! :) I really enjoy all the eight o'clock roasts and flavors. Definitely recommend and buy again.
